fluffy stuff spider web cotton candy 1Growing up, I have always liked cotton candy. Not so much for the sweet sugar flavor, but more for the cotton texture and the melt-in-your-mouth sensation. Charms, a candy company that makes several assortments of cotton candy, has a Halloween version of cotton candy called Fluffy Stuff Spider Web Cotton Candy. The most thrilling part of this cotton candy is that it is sour apple flavor. Of course, the flavor sour apple has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween, but sour candy and I happen to get along very well =D

I opened the bag expecting to see green cotton candy, but instead saw white. It is, after all, called Spider Web Cotton Candy. It looks more like a giant cotton ball. The texture of this cotton candy is similar to fresh cotton candy, but probably not as soft. No packaged cotton candy beats the texture of fresh cotton candy. So I pulled out some cotton candy and of course it melted in my mouth. However, after every mouthful, I would be left with a little cotton candy that I had to chew. Not a big deal, really, as the flavor was really good. The apple flavor was not very sour so even if you are not big on sour candy, you might enjoy it. Regardless, it’s still very fun to eat.

fluffy stuff spider web cotton candy 2The Fluffy Stuff Spider Web Cotton Candy can be found at World Market for $1.49. It is almost like you are munching on air and because of that, I do not feel so health conscious eating it – which is why I’m finishing up the bag as I write this review. If you like sour stuff (or slightly sour, as this isn’t super sour) and cotton candy, grab yourself a bag before Halloween is over.

gummi frankenstein brainsI am not the type to get candy in the shape of gross body parts, but for the sake of Halloween, I gave in to these Gummi Frankenstein Brains. When I opened the box, they actually did not look disgusting at all. If I had not known beforehand, I would never have guessed they were supposed to be brains. They are red circular gummies with pink, blue, yellow or white swirls on top. Why they chose those colors, I have no idea. The first thing I noticed when I grabbed one was that it felt dry and starchy. Made with real fruit juice, I was hit with the taste of dry plastic before the fruity flavor kicked in. I went on to try all the other colors but realized they all tasted the same. The ingredients proved me correct as they simply contain one fruit juice flavor – Apple.

gummi vampire fangsAlthough I should have stopped at the Gummi Frankenstein Brains, the Twilighter in me screamed for me to also get the Gummi Vampire Fangs. Yes, I too was lured into the vampire hype. Unlike the Gummi Brains, the Gummi Vampire Fangs resembled actual teeth, albeit smaller. You can hardly call them fangs since the teeth are practically even height. Of course, the gummy gums are pink and the teeth are white. The taste, however, was exactly the same as the Gummi Frankenstein Brains, including the starchiness. I put the boxes of the Gummi Frankenstein Brains and Gummi Vampire Fangs together and not surprisingly found that they contained the exact same ingredients, save for the artificial coloring.

gummi frankenstein brains and vampire fangsBoth the Gummi Frankenstien Brains and Gummi Vampire Fangs cost $1.49 at World Market. I have even heard that they can be found at the dollar store (go figure). Even so, I would not recommend these to anyone, unless you like the taste of starchy plastic. If you happen to already have a box and can’t stand the taste either, I have found that rinsing them with water gets rid of the plastic flavor and makes them more edible.

dark chocolate reeses peanut butter cups 1After seeing the commercial for the Dark Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups several times, you can imagine my excitement when I spotted them at Walgreens for under a buck. For those who have been living under a rock, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are cups of milk chocolate with peanut butter centers. In this case, the milk chocolate is substituted for dark chocolate. Being a fan of dark chocolate, I had high hopes for the new Dark Chocolate Reese’s.

If you have had the regular Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, you already have an idea of what the dark chocolate variation tastes like. Taking a bite of the edge of the cup, being careful to only nip the dark chocolate, I could taste the sweetness of the dark chocolate. dark chocolate reeses peanut butter cups 2However, taking a normal bite, the peanut butter overpowered the dark chocolate to the point where it tasted similarly to the original Reese’s. In fact, if I were blindfolded, I would not have noticed a difference.

Overall, while the Dark Chocolate Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups tastes great (just like the original), there is nothing new about it. Because of its similar taste to the original, I give it a rating of 3 out of 5.

cadbury curly wurly 1This candy caught my eye with its interesting name, Curly Wurly. Because of its colorful packaging, I thought it might be some fruity candy, but at closer look, I realized it was Cadbury brand milk chocolate with caramel. Not only is the “Curly Wurly” name interesting, but even its shape is longer and thinner than the average chocolate bar.

The Curly Wurly is a long strip of milk chocolate with an inner layer of caramel. cadbury curly wurly 2It is very thin and has a unique design with a lot of holes. The bar feels very fragile and limp, but is also very stretchy from the caramel filling. It tastes good, but not great. Of course, the milk chocolate and caramel go together very well, but it wasn’t anything special. It tastes like Twix, but without the cookie filling. So, you can imagine how “empty” the Curly Wurly tastes.

My overall impression of the Curly Wurly bar is that apart from its eye-catching packaging, the actual taste is very average. cadbury curly wurly 3The caramel is soft and chewing the bar made the caramel stick to my teeth, so I ended up just sucking on the Curly Wurly instead. For about a dollar, it won’t hurt you to try it, especially if you are a caramel fanatic. If you too prefer hardened caramel, you can always put it in your fridge before eating.

fresh and easy organic dark chocolate with ginger 1Continuing on with my current chocolate streak, this one is Fresh & Easy’s Organic 73% Cocoa Dark Chocolate with Ginger. Now I am not a huge fan of ginger, but I am always up for trying new candy and I do love dark chocolate. As per the USDA Organic seal, all the ingredients, from the chocolate to the ginger chips, are organic. The entire bar has 30 segmented pieces, each with the word Chocolate printed on it. A reminder I guess, in case you forget what it is you are eating. Just kidding. Each piece is really small, so it is helpful for those of you who are into portion control.

fresh and easy organic dark chocolate with ginger 2Eager to get my dark chocolate eating on, I tried one piece and let’s just say I couldn’t swallow it fast enough. The 73% dark chocolate was enjoyable as it was not too sweet, but the ginger chips were another story. Although small, the ginger chips were placed all over the chocolate and each bite let you know the ginger was present. The ginger flavor was rather strong. Unable to eat another piece, I decided to give it a rest for awhile and told myself to try it again later.

fresh and easy organic dark chocolate with ginger 3Fast forward to the next day, I decided to give it another go. This time, I ate a couple pieces, and slowly it began to grow on me. Not enough for me to love the Dark Chocolate with Ginger bar, but enough for me to be able to eat it. I even became a little brave and sucked on a piece till all the chocolate was gone and I was left with just the ginger chips. It was mortifying, to say the least. So the trick to eating this chocolate is to chew fast and not let the ginger linger too long in your mouth. Overall, I rate this chocolate a two out of five. For under $2 at Fresh & Easy, it certainly isn’t for everyone but it won’t hurt your wallet to try. The taste may somewhat grow on you if you give it a chance. Otherwise, this is a must try for the ginger lovers.
