I am not the type to get candy in the shape of gross body parts, but for the sake of Halloween, I gave in to these Gummi Frankenstein Brains. When I opened the box, they actually did not look disgusting at all. If I had not known beforehand, I would never have guessed they were supposed to be brains. They are red circular gummies with pink, blue, yellow or white swirls on top. Why they chose those colors, I have no idea. The first thing I noticed when I grabbed one was that it felt dry and starchy. Made with real fruit juice, I was hit with the taste of dry plastic before the fruity flavor kicked in. I went on to try all the other colors but realized they all tasted the same. The ingredients proved me correct as they simply contain one fruit juice flavor – Apple.
Although I should have stopped at the Gummi Frankenstein Brains, the Twilighter in me screamed for me to also get the Gummi Vampire Fangs. Yes, I too was lured into the vampire hype. Unlike the Gummi Brains, the Gummi Vampire Fangs resembled actual teeth, albeit smaller. You can hardly call them fangs since the teeth are practically even height. Of course, the gummy gums are pink and the teeth are white. The taste, however, was exactly the same as the Gummi Frankenstein Brains, including the starchiness. I put the boxes of the Gummi Frankenstein Brains and Gummi Vampire Fangs together and not surprisingly found that they contained the exact same ingredients, save for the artificial coloring.
Both the Gummi Frankenstien Brains and Gummi Vampire Fangs cost $1.49 at World Market. I have even heard that they can be found at the dollar store (go figure). Even so, I would not recommend these to anyone, unless you like the taste of starchy plastic. If you happen to already have a box and can’t stand the taste either, I have found that rinsing them with water gets rid of the plastic flavor and makes them more edible.
