On a mission to get my chocolate fix, I found these Cocoa D’or Nutffles in two flavors – Almond and Hazelnut. Each package costs about $1.29 at World Market and contains three individually packaged Nutffles.
First up: the Hazelnut. The Hazelnut Nutffles are dome-shaped and wrapped in lime green foil. Unwrapped, they resemble the look of Ferrero Rocher, though not as “nutty” looking. Made with Belgian chocolate, each Hazelnut Nutffle consists of a whole Hazelnut surrounded by three layers.
Inside, the Hazelnut is covered with a smooth, creamy chocolate filling that is followed with a thin, cocoa crisp wafer. Keeping the Nutffle together, its outermost layer is a chocolate layer surrounded with rice crisps. Altogether, this Hazelnut Nutffle does wonders. The hazelnut, rice crisps and crisp wafer gives the Nutffle a nice crunch which is deliciously offset by the creamy chocolate filling. Suffice to say, the rich Belgian chocolate and hazelnut flavor are a really nice touch.

Now for the Almond. The purple foiled Almond Nutffles are made of the same layers but, of course, the hazelnuts are replaced with almonds. Obviously, since I enjoyed the hazelnut variation, it was no surprise that the almond was equally as satisfying. I loved it. However, I think the Hazelnut gives the Nutffles an extra oomph in flavor, while the Almond gives it a better crunch. After eating both flavors and finding them both oh-so good, I realize it’s the smooth, inner chocolate filling that makes the Nutffles absolutely delicious.

I recommend both these Cocoa D’or Nutffles to anyone as they definitely do not disappoint. The different nuts give these Nutffles a slight difference, but if you’re big on nuts, there is also Peanut flavored Nutffles which I did not find. The $1.29 price tag is nothing compared to the happiness these Nutffles have given me =D

Dark chocolate and strawberry licorice, sounds like a good combination right? Well, the Australian candy company, Darrell Lea, thought so. Aptly named Dark Chocolate Coated Strawberry Liquorice, the candy is artificially flavored strawberry licorice twist smothered in 28% dark chocolate.
When I opened the bag, I was surprised to find that the packaging did not do the candy much justice. By that, I mean, the actual candy pieces were completely smothered in dark chocolate and looked similar to miniature Twix bars.
Also, the packaging has the candy looking like small bite sized pieces, but the actual candy itself is longer and more of a mouthful. Taste-wise, the dark chocolate was disappointing, as I could not really distinguish it from regular milk chocolate. On the other hand, the strawberry licorice was really good, despite being artificially flavored. The texture was a lot chewier than expected and after eating one, I found licorice bits stuck between my teeth.
Together, I did not think the chocolate and licorice meshed well. Every time I ate one, the chocolate would be long gone by the time I got to chewing onto the licorice part. Even though the chocolate did not taste like dark chocolate, this candy was worth trying merely for the strawberry licorice. The flavor of the licorice reminded me of strawberry fruit roll-ups. For $4.99 at World Market, I do not think I would buy this again, but if I run into Darrell Lea’s strawberry or other fruit flavored licorice without the chocolate, I would definitely get it.

8 Oct 2009Just when I thought candy sales were doing fine, the results of a new survey released by the National Retail Federation indicate that compared to last year, consumers plan to spend 15.4% less on Halloween. Of the survey takers who said the recession made an impact on their Halloween plans, 46.5% said they would spend less on candy and 5.3% said they would not buy candy for Halloween at all.
For people who plan to spend less, that is completely understandable. Times are tough, but innocent, little kids should still have their night of trick-or-treating. For those who do not plan on giving candy to adorable trick-or-treaters, BOO to you!
People still have time to prove this survey wrong. Go out and buy some Halloween candy =D

I have been craving chocolates lately, so expect the next few reviews to be on chocolates =D
Vosges Haut-Chocolat was founded by a woman named Katrina with the main objective of traveling the world through chocolate. She accomplished just that as Vosges is now known for its exotic chocolate bar flavors, such as Black Pearl (wasabi, ginger, sesame seeds, chocolate) or Naga (Indian curry, coconut, chocolate). This review in particular is on the Vosges Mo’s Bacon Bar. That’s right. Bacon. This milk chocolate bar is made with 45% cacao, applewood smoked bacon, and alderwood smoked salt. I love bacon and I love chocolate, but would I love them mixed together?
The bar of chocolate is made up of 8 squares, some with the Vosges Haut-Chocolat logo, and others with a picture of a lady holding a Vosges bag. I broke off one of the squares and could see bits of what looked like bacon in the chocolate. I took my first bite and it was sweet… salty… then sweet again. A rather nice play on the senses. At times, there was a hint of a bacon flavor and it was not overpowering at all. The inclusion of the alderwood smoked salt gave this Vosges Mo’s Bacon Bar its utterly delicious salty and sweet combination.
Overall, if I had to describe this chocolate bar in one word, I would say “Genius.” Simply because bacon is not a typical ingredient you would find in a bar of chocolate and you also would not expect it to taste this good. This Vosges chocolate bar does wonders, but it is reflected in its price. It costs $5.99 at World Market, but if you don’t have a World Market near you, you can find it on Amazon or their website. One thing is for sure though, “You get what you pay for,” so try one out for yourself and you’ll definitely be in for a treat.
Side note: if you’re a fan of dark chocolate like me, the Mo’s Bacon Bar is also available in a dark chocolate variation =D

4 Oct 2009I have always wanted to go to Dubai, but now more so than ever. That is because Dubai is now home of the largest candy store in the world! Called Candylicious, the 10,000 square foot store located at the Dubai Mall, has over 3,000 varieties of candy from around the world. As the largest candy store in the world, Candylicious will also have the biggest ‘Pick and Mix’ wall where you can create a ‘Pick and Mix’ bag filled with all the candies of your choice. To add to the candy fantasy world ideal, a 10-meter tall singing chocolate tree decorated with colorful lollipops stands in the center of the store. Also at the Dubai Mall is Candylicious Junior, a candy filled car that circles the mall to satisfy your sweet tooth and lure you to the Candylicious store.
