There is a new line of M&M’s chocolate candies called M&M’s Premiums. According to their website, there are five flavors – triple chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate almond, mint chocolate, and raspberry almond. At the store, I did indeed find five flavors, but instead of the dark chocolate listed on the website, I found a Mocha flavored one. Maybe the website is wrong and there isn’t a dark chocolate flavor, or perhaps there are actually six flavors out there? Either way, these M&M’s Premiums are different from your regular bags of M&M’s. They are fancied up in hourglass-shaped boxes and are also more expensive at the cost of about $5 a box.
Beginning with the Raspberry Almond M&M’s Premiums, I have to say they look very appealing. Inside the red box is a clear bag with different sized egg-shaped M&M’s, some small and some big, depending on the actual size of the inner almond. Their color is what makes them appealing as they are of a metallic pink color with black speckles. When I opened the bag I could instantly smell the raspberry flavor. As someone who is not big on chocolate with fruity insides, I honestly was not expecting to like these. However, these turned out to be rather good. The raspberry flavor is apparent in every bite, but the almond offsets the raspberry flavor keeping it from taking over the chocolate. Each almond is wrapped in raspberry flavored white chocolate which is then covered with a layer of dark chocolate. Although delicious, I couldn’t distinguish the white chocolate from the dark chocolate, but biting it in half, the separate chocolate layers look pretty neat. Overall, a must try.

The Triple Chocolate M&M’s Premiums are packaged in a purple box. Inside, the M&M’s are big, circular, metallic purple with metallic blue speckles. As you might have already guessed by the triple chocolate flavor, each M&M has three layers of chocolate – milk, white and dark. I sucked on one and could taste the M&M going from dark to white to milk chocolate. However, I wouldn’t recommend eating them that way, as it didn’t taste like anything special. Each chocolate layer, including the dark, was very sweet. Chewing on the Triple Chocolate Premium M&M’s, I wasn’t able to differentiate the three different types of chocolate, but there definitely was some happiness going on in my mouth. They are similar to Plain M&M’s as they have nothing inside except chocolate, but these M&M Premiums are bigger and therefore have more chocolate with each bite. I am not sure whether it is attributable to the bigger size or the three different chocolate layers, but the Triple Chocolate M&M’s Premiums are a step up from Plain M&M’s.

Now for the Mint Chocolate M&M’s Premiums. They are metallic green speckled with black and come packaged in a green box. Shape-wise, they are exactly like the Triple Chocolate Premiums – circular and bigger than Plain M&M’s. Upon opening the bag, I was instantly hit with a whiff of the mint chocolate, reminding me of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Yum. Better than the smell was the actual taste. Double Yum. They are like Andes Mints but in M&M’s form. Each M&M has a white chocolate mint center wrapped with dark chocolate. After eating some, my throat was left with a cool, minty feel. A pleasant sensation only adding to the delicious-ness of the Mint Chocolate M&M’s Premiums.

Next flavor – Mocha M&M’s Premiums. Just like the color of coffee, the Mocha M&M’s Premiums are sold in brown boxes. The M&M’s themselves are metallic bronze with black speckles, my personal favorite color of the Premiums line. I opened the bag expecting them to smell like coffee, but surprisingly, they just smelled like chocolates. Unlike the previous M&M’s Premiums, the mocha flavor consists of only milk chocolate. The Mocha M&M’s have a mere hint of the mocha flavor, which is a little disappointing. The mocha flavor is there but easily gets lost within the milk chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, it is still good, but I could have done with more mocha.

The last flavor I have is the Chocolate Almond M&M’s Premiums. Packaged in a blue box, the first color that comes to mind when looking at the M&M’s themselves is cerulean, my favorite crayon color as a kid (high five if you know what I am talking about). They are metallic blue (or cerulean =D) with dark midnight blue speckles. I find it interesting that they chose plain ol’ almond milk chocolate when they already have a regular Almond M&M’s product. They should have gone with something different, such as chocolate hazelnut, or at least have made it dark chocolate almond or white chocolate almond. Also, why make both a raspberry almond and a chocolate almond flavor? Possibly for people, like me, who do not like fruity chocolate? Regardless, I found the Chocolate Almond M&M’s Premiums to be average tasting. So, even with not being a fan of chocolate with fruity flavors, I very much prefer the raspberry almond flavor over the chocolate almond.

The entire M&M’s Premiums line looks very attractive, but unfortunately have my invisible expensive seal stamped on them. One thing to note is that inside each box, the M&M’s are contained in a resealable bag. So, each bag has a hole covered with a cute, resealable sticker that says “simply fabulous…always fun.” For $5, I would recommend trying the Raspberry Almond and Mint Chocolate flavors. The rest are up to you to try at your own risk =D
