Doña Pepa

In: Chocolate| Kraft Foods

Doña Pepa is another candy from Peru that was a mystery to me upon first glance. Looking at the wrapper, I had no idea what kind of candy it was or what it would look like. In my hands, it felt like some sort of candy bar, but what was it really? On the outside, the wrapper basically just has a picture of a lady with her hair designed with colorful polka dots. Little did I know of the treat that was waiting for me inside.

As soon as I looked at the actual candy, I realized what the polka dot design on the wrapper was for. Who would have known her hair would be the clue? And just like her hair, the actual candy itself is completely covered in pink, green, yellow, and white polka dot sprinkles. It actually looks really pretty! Inside, it is made up of two oblong shaped cookies, each coated with a thin layer of chocolate, stacked on top of each other.

Matching its appealing look is its delicious taste. The double layer of cookies gives this candy a nice crunch which is then enhanced with the gazillion polka dot sprinkles. The chocolate coating is just right, as the chocolate flavor is apparent but does not overwhelm with its sweetness. It is actually pretty similar to Frosted Animal Crackers. That said, Doña Pepa is really good but it tastes more like a snack than actual candy.

pop rocks candy cane 1The last thing that comes to mind this holiday is Pop Rocks, yet this adventurous candy company mixed candy canes and pop rocks to bring us… Candy Cane Pop Rocks! For those of you who don’t know what Pop Rocks are, just imagine hard candy smashed into thousands of pieces that pop and crackle in your mouth.

I opened a packet and saw white and red colored Pop Rocks. Just by looking at it, I could almost taste how good the Candy Cane Pop Rocks would be. I leaned my head back, took a “swig,” and instead of immediate happiness, I paused. What? Cherry? I tasted cherry, but was sure that I had to be wrong. pop rocks candy cane 2So I tossed more in my mouth and the disappointment really sunk in. I felt betrayed. They tasted nothing like candy canes. In fact, they tasted exactly like their original Strawberry Pop Rocks.

For a pack of three, these cost a little over a buck. I rate it a two merely for the false advertisement. Sure, they are Pop Rocks and they did indeed pop in my mouth, but there was no hint whatsoever of a candy cane flavor. Take my advice, pass on these “Candy Cane” Pop Rocks (especially if you’ve already tried the strawberry flavor).
