Just when I thought candy sales were doing fine, the results of a new survey released by the National Retail Federation indicate that compared to last year, consumers plan to spend 15.4% less on Halloween. Of the survey takers who said the recession made an impact on their Halloween plans, 46.5% said they would spend less on candy and 5.3% said they would not buy candy for Halloween at all.

For people who plan to spend less, that is completely understandable. Times are tough, but innocent, little kids should still have their night of trick-or-treating. For those who do not plan on giving candy to adorable trick-or-treaters, BOO to you!

People still have time to prove this survey wrong. Go out and buy some Halloween candy =D

I have always wanted to go to Dubai, but now more so than ever. That is because Dubai is now home of the largest candy store in the world! Called Candylicious, the 10,000 square foot store located at the Dubai Mall, has over 3,000 varieties of candy from around the world. The Cedar Crest Dental Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, is offering trick-or-treaters money in exchange for their Halloween candy. They are paying $1.00 per pound of unopened candy and are then going to send the candy to troops overseas. Dr. Ginger Vondell, a dentist at the Cedar Crest Dental Center, reasons that “visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost.”

I, personally, think that Halloween is all about the candy and, come on, it only comes around once a year! It is always fun to come back home to see which candies you got and compare them with your friends or siblings’ pile of candy. As far as dental hygiene goes, I think the main problem is that kids don’t brush well to begin with, so candy can definitely add to that problem. However, where there is a bad, there is always a good. When my brother was younger, he lost at least two loose teeth from eating Now and Laters. Would you rather have your loose tooth taken out by candy or by a dentist? =D

Of course, my love of candy makes me totally against this exchange of candy for money. It’s only a dollar per pound! One pound of candy makes me a lot more happy than a lousy buck. This dental clinic preaches that candy is bad for your teeth, but then goes on to say that they will send the candy you bring in to troops overseas. So how can candy be bad for your clients, but not for troops overseas?

With our horrible economy, people have cut back on their spending, be it for houses, cars, or clothes. But what about candy? According to store owners, candy manufacturers, and food industry analysts, candy and chocolate sales are still going strong. The Hershey Company had second quarter earnings that were 71 percent more than a year ago. Of course, this is largely due to the sales arising from all my candy purchases. Just kidding. I would think people still buy candy despite the current economic state because candy itself is relatively inexpensive. They’re at the checkout counters at plenty of stores, and it’s just too tempting to say no to a $0.50 candy bar. Plus, chocolates increase the level of endorphins in the brain, so it’s easy, even if for just a few moments, to decrease the stress the economy brings by stuffing your face with a delicious bar of chocolate.

In the United states alone, candy sales are expected to rise by 3.4 percent from last year. Even so, I really do hope everyone continues to buy tons and tons of candy this Halloween for all the cute, adorable trick-or-treaters.

Haribo has sour candies called MAOAM which are bringing in numerous complaints in Europe. The packaging, specifically for the lemon lime and cherry lime flavors, allegedly has pornographic implications.  One man in particular named Simon Simpkins, who is a father of two, is outraged, claiming that the packaging of the lemon lime flavored MAOAM depict the lemon and lime fruits engaging in lewd behavior. He took it so far as to even bring it up with the manager. What did he expect the manager to say? Something like “I’m sorry, let me pull these off the shelves so you don’t have to explain to your kids why lemons and limes shouldn’t be engaging in indecent behavior?”

I personally have never seen this candy till today, but really, come on. It’s not like fruits have body parts. It only becomes nasty if you make it nasty.  So shame on you Mr. Simpkins. Take your dirty mind out of the gutter and let your kids enjoy some candy. If I had kids, I wouldn’t think twice about letting them eat this candy. I’m willing to bet that little innocent kids would only see them as cute lemons, limes and cherries.

Haribo’s response was “this jovial MAOAM man is very popular with fans, both young and old.”
