Beso de Negra

I heart S’mores. This Colombian candy called Beso de Negra is the candy equivalent or more like the unmelted version of S’mores. It is a big chunk of marshmallow on a cracker covered in chocolate. The bag I have has two pieces and costs $1.25. Seems expensive right off the bat, but let’s see if it lives up to its price.

The chocolate layer of my Beso de Negra consisted of cracked chocolate pieces. Granted, I have had these sitting around for awhile and it may have cracked from other candy I had placed on top of it. Even so, these chocolates were delicious! The inner marshmallow is huge and of a nice consistency. It is not sticky at all and is of a light, foamy texture. The cracker is not your typical S’mores graham cracker, but more cookie-like (which I like =D). Altogether, this Beso de Negra is really really good.

In English, “Beso de Negra” means “Black woman’s kiss.” I do not know why, but I wonder where they were going with that. In my opinion, $1.25 is pretty pricey for two pieces of chocolate, but most definitely worth it for these yummy marshmallow goodies.

Turrón Supercoco

Posted In: Exotic| Fruity| Super

15 Mar 2010

Now here is another review of a Colombian candy. This one is called Turrón Supercoco. The packaging has a green and yellow design with a picture of a coconut on the front. According to the bag, the candy contains 100% natural pieces of coconut. Although I am not a huge fan of coconut flavored anything, I am all about using natural ingredients.

Inside the bag, there are 50 rectangular candy pieces, or as the bag describes them, “Turrones.” I unwrapped my first piece and immediately smelled the coconut. I popped it in my mouth and could taste somewhat of a sweet, sugary, caramel like flavor. The coconut flavor was also present, but became more obvious after sucking on the candy for awhile. Surprisingly, I actually thought the flavor was pretty good. However, the texture could use a little work. It starts off as this solid rectangular candy, but after sucking on it, the coconut pieces start to appear and the texture goes from a smooth surface to a rough one. The coconut pieces are similar to hardened grated coconut pieces and while they may be good on dessert, they are not as appealing in these Turrones. I especially did not like being left with coconut pieces in the back of my throat.

Overall, I would have to say these Turrón Supercoco candies are all right. The flavor is fine, but the texture could be better. Rather than sucking on the candy, I found that chewing on the candy worked out better for me. Do note that the texture does not necessarily make these candies soft chews, it will take some effort to get into it. For me, chewing on the candy disguised the hardened coconut pieces, so I was left to merely enjoy the taste of the sugary, coconut flavor.

Sonrie’s Chokis

Posted In: Chocolate| Frito Lay

22 Feb 2010

This review and the next few reviews will be on either Colombian or Peruvian candy. They were sent to me by my boyfriend and his friends. So, thanks a bunch to James, Amparo, and Nicolle =D [Oh, and just for the record, they are in no way affiliated with these candies or the candy companies]. Now on to the first candy.

This is a Colombian chocolate candy called Chokis. The brand is Sonrie’s and interestingly enough, it is made by the company Frito Lay. Sonrie in Spanish means “smile,” so hopefully like Frito Lay’s chips, this too will make me smile. According to the wrapper, these are “chocolatosas y deliciosas” which translates out to “chocolatey and delicious.” But is it true?

The packaging is pretty simple and has a picture of round chocolate balls in different sizes. Upon opening it, however, I found that the chocolates are pretty much the same size, similar to Whoppers but slightly smaller. Also, these chocolate balls are really, really light and feel as if they are hollow on the inside. On the wrapper, the candy is described as “Bolitas de Maiz Cubiertas con Chocolate” which means “Balls of corn covered with chocolate.” After biting into one, it reminds me of chocolate with rice crisps. But remember, this is made with corn and is a lot more airy than rice crisps. They still have a slight crunch to them, but if you prefer a bigger crunch, you can always refrigerate them a little.

Overall, I actually like these Chokis a lot. The bag is a small 18 gram bag of chocolates for 95 cents. It may seem pricey for how small the bag is, but it actually has a decent amount of chocolate balls in it. I can’t give you the exact number due to how excited I got when opening the package. I just started popping them into my mouth without counting. The lightness of the corn crisps makes it really easy to devour a handful without even knowing about it. I really think these Chokis would taste great mixed in a bag of popcorn (But after the popcorn has cooled down, of course, otherwise you’d get melty chocolate which is a no-no).

This is another candy from Bali’s Best, but instead of tea candy, it is coffee candy. Their line of coffee candy includes regular Coffee Candy and Latte Candy, but I will be reviewing their Espresso Candy. Bali’s Best Espresso Candy is made with real Sumatran Coffee from Java, Indonesia. Just like the tea candy, there are 42 individually wrapped candies each containing 3 milligrams of caffeine.

These brown Espresso candies are round, but wider versions of the tea candies. The wider shape allows these candies room to have a soft, espresso filling. After trying some, I have to say they are pretty good. With 100% natural ingredients, they taste like real coffee. In fact, they taste like the type of coffee I enjoy, where the coffee is really strong, but sweetened with sugar. The inner espresso filling is gooey and not so great texture-wise if you bite into the candy. While I think the candy would have been great even without that extra espresso filling, it definitely makes this candy different.

This Espresso Candy is a must try for coffee lovers out there. Minus the caffeine kick you get from drinking an actual cup of coffee, I actually feel like I just drank some coffee. So much that I even have that lingering coffee breath =D
